STORY BEHIND THE BATIK TULIS: Night Walk with Elephants

“Night Walk with Elephants”  batik trousers depicts an elephant with the Mega-Mendung cloud. The colorful history of the Cirebon batiks originated from the collaboration of religions, arts and cultures brought together by various ethnics and nations in the past. The Elephant in this batik means the core of nature or also the earth, it is derived from the Indian influence. Whilst the Megamendung motif is related to the arrival of the Chinese in the region of Cirebon, based on historical literature. Mega, meaning cloud, and Mendung, meaning the cloudy weather, this particular blue and red motif of the batik used in this garment symbolizes the infinite and quiet sky as the carrier signifies the bearer fertility and giver of life.

“Batik Tulis” means a free-hand painting technique using melted wax to design a motif based on a heritage of Indonesian symbolism on textiles. This specific fabric was hand dyed and hand drawn by batik artists in Cirebon, Indonesia.

The fabric has been specially hand-drawn and irregularities are a natural characteristic of this fabric.
